Periodontology
Periodontology take care about gum diseases. Causes of these diseases are different, but mainly takes place plaque and tartar. Our mouths are full of bacteria. These bacteria, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless “plaque” on teeth. Brushing and flossing help get rid of plaque. Plaque that is not removed can harden and form “tartar” that brushing doesn’t clean. Only a professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist can remove tartar. Other factors can be including stress, smoking, genetic factors, some common diseases. As a result of these changes can be observed inflammatory gingival bleeding, with the subsequent loss of bone and loosening of the teeth and their premature loss. Treatment and prevention of these diseases in most cases are positive and they are completely reversible and treatable.
Periodontal disease mainly are separated in two section they are called gingivitis and periodontitis.
A major cause of these inflammatory diseases are plaque and tartar. The tartar was formed by the maturation and mineralization of plaque. They are main reason for forming a surface that favors the retention of new quantities of plaque and microorganisms. When that happens, the gums become inflamed and start to bleed, also act on the enamel caries forming factors.
Bleeding is a symptom of gingivitis. In healthy gums there is no bleeding. Inflamed gums impede the proper cleaning and accumulate new quantities of tartar. Only a professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist can remove tartar.
Treatment of periodontal diseases
It start by cleaning the tartar. This is procedure which is performed with ultrasound machine and scraping off the tartar from above and below the gum line. The procedure is painless. But is is possible some patients to have sensitivity to inflammatory sites and this require placing local anesthesia and after that to start the procedure. The procedure ends with a polishing. If there is a presence of periodontal pockets. It need to be done curettage for better and more rapid healing. If the case is severe manipulation is done in several visits. If necessary it can be used and antibiotic.
How often to clean tartar
Number of dental clinic visits is determined individually depending on the severity of the condition. If there is severe inflammation with the presence of periodontal pockets cleaning should be done every 3-4 months. If there is a small gingivitis 6 months. Sometimes there are patients who develop very little tartar and have very good dental hygiene, these patients can be cleaned once a year.
